The leadership of the University of Notre Dame has sparked a firestorm with their decision to invite President Obama to give the commencement address at this year's graduation ceremony and to confer on him an honorary degree. This decision is almost incomprehensible.
President Obama opposes everything that the Catholic Church believes about the value and sanctity of life. He has backtracked on many of his promises from the campaign, but the one area in which he has stuck to his commitments unwaveringly is in the area of abortion.
I am not a Catholic, but I deeply respect the commitment of the church--though sadly not most of their politician members--to defending the unborn. But now their flagship school is turning away from the truth in pursuit of what exactly? Political acceptance? Favor with the media? Government funding? What Notre Dame is doing in honoring a radically pro-abortion president goes against what the Scripture says.
And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda; And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? Luke 1:39-43
Look at this carefully--before Jesus was born, just days after He was conceived of the Holy Ghost, Mary was already a mother. There can be no clearer statement of the pro-life case than that. Too bad the school named for her isn't as committed to life as President Obama is to abortion.
